Common Core = Higher Standards?

Don’t miss these two you-tubes regarding Common Core math standards in elementary school.

The first clip involves a staff development session at an elementary school.  The leader confirms that Common Core standards emphasize the “understanding” of math concepts rather than the “final answers.” Emphasis is moving to the explanation of the answer rather than on computation.  This pedagogy style is nothing new.  In fact, back in the 90’s it was part of the “math wars.”

This clip involves an Oklahoma town hall meeting discussing Common Core.  A first-grade teacher asks the panel to explain how taking several math concepts, such as telling time, fractions, understanding money, etc., from the first grade standards and moving them to an upper grade is making first grade more rigorous? Excellent view if you want to know specifics about Common Core Standards. This is a courageous teacher
